Nanjunda Swamy (29), a Flipkart delivery man, was allegedly killed by K Varun Kumar (22), a gym trainer as Varun needed a mobile phone badly but he didn’t have Rs 11,999 to pay for a Redmi Note 3.

Varun joined the gym nearly 10 days back and he needed a phone as everyone in the gym including his friends and clients had phones. Varun talked to his father and demanded money for it. His father who is a mechanic by profession refused to give money and told him to arrange on his own as he had started working too.

As per police officials, this was when Varun decided to kill the delivery man and devised a plan for the purpose. He ordered a phone online on Dec 8 and gave the gym’s contact number for communication purpose.

He got a call from Swamy on Dec 9 when the delivery boy was near the building at around 12.30 pm and he called the victim at the second floor. As Varun had no money, he tried to grab the phone but Swamy escaped and ran away. Varun then hit Swamy’s head with a flower pot and as the delivery man fell, he hit him with another flower pot which was kept in the gym’s passage. Swamy fell unconscious and his throat was then slit using the knife which Varun had already brought for committing such heinous act.

As per police, after slitting Swamy’s throat, Varun watched him dying and the body was dumped by him in the lift shaft after 10 hrs.

An official, who is a part of the investigating team, told,

“After murdering the victim around 12.45 pm, the accused hid the body inside the gym as he had difficulties in shifting it. At the time of the incident, there was nobody in the gym. When a few customers came for the evening session, Varun sent them back after cooking up a story. Later in the night, after the bank on the first floor and a fruit stall in the basement had shut for the night, Varun shifted the body around 11 pm to the basement. He kept the body in the lift shaft and escaped.”

Varun took two smart phones, Rs. 10,000 cash (5 notes of Rs. 2,000) and some other goods from Swamy’s bag and escaped. He gave HTC smartphone (Rs. 24,000) to a friend and started using the Redmi mobile phone himself.

After two days of the unfortunate incident, a complaint was filed in the Byatarayanapura police station by Swamy’s father and almost at the same time, the dead body of Swamy was discovered in the lift shaft at Vijayanagar, however at that time, police had no clue whose dead body it was.

The official further told,

“We spoke to the online portal where the victim worked. We got to know that he was missing after he went to deliver a smartphone to a customer in Vijayanagar and it was the same building where the body was found. We also got to know from the customers that Varun had not opened the gym since Friday. We suspected his involvement and arrested him from his residence SVG Nagar in Moodalapalya on Tuesday.”

Varun has been booked under IPC sections 302 and 397 for murder and robbery respectively by the Vijayanagar police and this is what DCP (West) MN Anuchet has to say in this connection,

“It was a pre-planned murder as he had kept the kitchen knife in the gym a day before the phone was to be delivered.”

What type of human being is that person for whom the value of human life is less than a mobile phone? He’s no less than a shame for the society and doesn’t seem to have a healthy mental state!
