Born on September 7, 1963, Neerja Bhanot was a brave and courageous lady whom not only India but the whole world salutes. She was awarded with Ashoka Chakra for the commendable valor she showed when Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked by terrorists on September 5, 1986.
Even though she lost her life while saving more than 350 passengers, she has become immortal and her name is written in golden words in the history of India as she not even for a moment thought about herself despite the fact that she could have easily escaped the situation through emergency exit.
Born in Chandigarh, she was the daughter of a journalist Harish Bhanot and Rama Bhanot. As far as early schooling is concerned, she studied in Chandigarh’s Sacred Heart Sen. Sec. School till 5th standard. In March 1985, she got married and joined her husband in Gulf but her marriage didn’t seem to work on account of dowry issue and in just 2 months, she came back to her parents.
She head to Miami after being selected for the job of a flight attendant with Pan Am 73, nevertheless, she became a purser on returning from the training.
