Like 2015, IIT-Bombay has been the first choice of a majority of top 100 rankers in 2016 too; whereas last year, this number was 65, it’s increased to 67 this year.
Powai campus is chosen by 67 out of the 100 toppers while IIT-Delhi which got 30 toppers last year is selected by 28 candidates in 2016 and IIT-Madras is the choice of merely 5 top rankers. However, surprisingly, IIT-Kanpur that is normally chosen by 2-3 candidates from top 100 could not get any student in 2016.
On Thursday, first round’s results were released by Joint Seat Allocation Authority and seats were allotted in NITs, IITs along with some centrally-funded technical institutes. Although most students chose IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay, yet 33,500 students applied more for the courses available in IIT-Madras and IIT-Kharagpur.
IIT-Kharagpur’s every seat received applications from 224 contenders whereas 221 was the number of candidates for each seat in IIT-Madras. For IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi, these numbers were 161 and 190 respectively. IIT-Kanpur which got 75 students last year from the top 500 could get only 56 candidates this year.
At IIT-Bombay, computer science and engineering’s opening rank was 1 and closing rank was 60 while for electrical engineering, these ranks were 9 and 240. CSE’s opening and closing ranks at IIT-Delhi were 24 and 111 respectively and it was observed that CSE was chosen by a large number of students in both the institutes.
