Bangladesh is a small country but that doesn’t mean that there are not so many interesting facts. In fact, you’ll just be surprised after reading this post and knowing all the wonderful facts. 1. National Anthem –
The national anthem of Bangladesh, “Amar Sonar Bangla (আমার সোনার বাংলা)” is written by the same person who wrote India’s national anthem. Yes, Rabindranath Tagore wrote the national anthems for both countries.
2. Know Their National Flag –
The national flag of Bangladesh has two colors “Green” and “Red”. “Green” stands for beautiful green lands and villages of Bangladesh and “Red” stands for the people who shed their blood in the fight to earn independence for their beloved country.
3. National Animal –
The endangered species “Royal Bengal Tiger” is the national animal of Bangladesh. This endangered species can still be found in large numbers in mangrove forests of the Sundarbans in Bangladesh and West Bengal in India. Our national animal is also “Tiger”.
4. World’s Largest Mangrove –
The “Sundarbans” is the world’s largest mangrove forest. While India(West Bengal) posses 40% of the total area for mangrove, the rest 60% comes under the area of Bangladesh. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The place got the name for the trees called “sundari(Heritiera fomes)”. The place has got Royal Bengal Tigers, many endangered species of birds and insects.
5. Dhaka
Bangladesh may be a small country but the capital of Bangladesh, “Dhaka” is the 10th largest city in the world.
6. Cox’s Bazar –
It is the world’s largest uninterrupted or unbroken sea beach. It is also a major tourist destination.
7. International Mother Language Day –
21st February, the day the peoples of Bangladesh can never forget. In 1952 on 21st February, students from different institutes of Bangladesh got shot and murdered by Police near Bangladesh. The students wanted their mother-tongue, “Bengali” to get recognition as one of two national languages but they never made it back to their institutes. UNESCO announced 21st February as “International Mother Language Day” in 1999.
7. Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC)
It is the world’s largest non-governmental organization (NGO).
9. United Nations Peacekeepers –
The highest number of “United Nations Peacekeepers” come from Bangladesh. The numbers are as high as 9,446. The previous number may seem small but even India with many times the population of Bangladesh, doesn’t have that many number of peacekeepers.
