9 Important Things To Know About Manohar Parrikar

Being the incumbent Defence Minister of India, Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar is one of the most powerful man from India and commonly known as the ‘most bad-ass defense minister from India’. Here are some important things to know about this man.

1. Before being included into the Council of Ministers of the Union Government on 9th November 2014, he was Chief Minister of Goa and then from March 2012 to November 2014, Parikkar was the first BJP minister from Goa.

2. Born in Mapusa, goa Parikkar is the first IIT Graduate to serve as Chief Minister of an Indian state.

3. Parrikar completed his secondary education in Marathi and went on to graduate in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay popularly known as IIT Bombay.Parikkar tied a knot to Medha who died of cancer in 2000.

4. Parrikar joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at a young age and also proceeded to became a Mukhya shikshak in the final years of his schooling.

5. In an interview with news channel, Parrikar says that he learnt “discipline, progressiveness, gender equality, equality of all before the law, nationalism and social responsibility from the RSS”

6. The BJP party under Parrikar, was known as an ‘anti-minority’ party before the assembly election. The party slowly started gaining confidence of this section, which constitutes almost 26.7 percent of the State population

7. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar approved a 89 lakh  junket for six of his MLAs, which included three ministers, to attend the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

8. In 2012 Parrikar was awarded as CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in politics category.

9. He was active in the RSS’s North Goa unit, becoming a key organised of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
