The OROP or the One Rank One Pension scheme was announced on the 6th of September 2015, by Modi government. However, ex-servicemen are disappointed by this scheme, because their concerns haven’t been addressed.
This scheme promised equal pension to soldiers of the same rank (who served for the same period), no matter what their retirement date is. PM Modi had stated that the 1st installment of around 5,500 crores was paid towards this scheme. However, this policy received a lot of flak from veterans as they believed that OROP is a 1-time increment, and in this, seniors might receive lower pensions than the juniors.
Owing to this controversial retirement policy of Modi government, a 70 year old Army veteran Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal committed suicide by consuming poison. Now, this sparked a lot of political brawl. There were too many chaotic scenes outside that Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, as cops made all attempts of stopping politicians from entering and meeting the family of Ram Kishan.
His friends had stated that Ram Kishan tried hard to meet Manohar Parrikar, the defense minister, before committing suicide. There were protests outside the hospital by Congress leaders Jyotiraditya Scindia, Rahul Gandhi and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. However, they were detained by the police due to these protests.
Then, too much chaos was created by the supporters outside Mandir Marg Police Station. Very soon, congress supporters started trending the hashtags #BJPagainstArmy abd #ModiInsultsArmy on Twitter! Have a look at the tweets;
