The campaigning for US Presidential elections is going on at a full swing but there is a question which is troubling some people as to why President Barack Obama is not trying for the third term of President. He convincingly won 2008 & 2012 elections. In 2008, Obama contesting from Democratic party got 365 electoral votes while John McCain from Republican party got 173 only. In 2012, Obama again won convincingly by getting 332 electoral votes while Mitt Romney from Republican party got only 206.
Even after winning 2008 & 2012 convincingly why Barack Obama is not trying for 3rd time? Why Hillary Clinton from Democratic party is contesting instead of Obama?
Well, we can guarantee you one thing for sure that this man, Donald Trump, is definitely not the reason for Obama not trying for the third term.
President Obama cannot run for the third time due to the 22nd amendment to the constitution which was signed in 1951.
George Washington, the first President of USA made a decision not to run for the third term and since then. the Presidents have served for maximum two terms till 1940 until Roosevelt became the President.
The only President who has won more than two terms is Franklin D. Roosevelt. Yes, he was elected four times as it was the time of great difficulty for USA and it was going to face Great Depression and World War II.
Harry S. Truman was the last President who was legally eligible for the third term, as the amendment was made after he was first elected as the President.
Here is what the first section of 22nd Amendment reads:
“Section 1.
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.”
One more point that can be added in this context is that President Barack Obama’s popularity has decreased over the time and it won’t be advisable for him to go for polls. Moreover, he won’t be getting support from his own party on this matter so Hillary Clinton is correct candidate for Democratic party for this elections.
