The Central government seems to have made up mind of providing reservation in IITs for girls as the number of girl students in IIT is very less in comparison to the number of male students. The matter was discussed in the meeting of IIT Council which took place in Mumbai on Friday in which they came up with ways to increase the number of girl students to 20 percent from the present 8-9 percent. HRD minister Prakash Javadekar announced, “It has been decided to give admission to more girls.”
As per sources, additional seats will be kept for the each course, thus making it a little easy for girls to enter IITs. For example, if the electronics program of IIT-Kanpur has 50 seats, then 1 or 2 seats will be kept aside only for girls. Chairman of the standing committee of IIT Council, Ashok Misra, said,
“Diversity is essential. We know that other engineering colleges have about 40-50% girls on their campuses, not the IITs though. We know that the girls who clear our JEE (Advanced) are capable and we would like them to join the IITs.”
The esteemed technical colleges are very much male-dominated at the present time, as only 800 out of 4500 girls are able to join IITs by clearing JEE (advanced).
The question that arises now is whether the reservation will solve the purpose or not! It is quite surprising that mostly girls are the toppers in the 12th board exams but when it comes to tough examinations of JEE, they are not able to perform in the same manner. There has been a debate going on in India regarding reservation in which there are many who are of the opinion that reservation system should be abolished as it has already been carried on for 70 years and hasn’t served the purpose completely. And at this moment, introduction of reservation in IITs can give rise to a new controversy.
Another topic on which IIT Council had a discussion was how to attract foreign students and the other one was of fee hike of PG students. A source told, “The IITs spend Rs 1.24 lakh per annum per students, but charge Rs 20,000 a year from each student. However, a decision to that effect is still pending.” It has also been discussed that JEE and GATE entrance exams will be conducted in more international nations.
The Council will also clear the path for setting up wellness centre in each campus in order to handle the issues of suicide and stress. Induction programs will be made compulsory so that students get accustomed soon with the life of IITs and stress can be handled properly.
