The increasing pollution is definitely a great concern in India and vehicles which run on petrol/diesel are one of the biggest reasons of the same. However, government is planning to control pollution by making sure that by 2030, there will be only electric cars in India. This will reduce not only pollution but also bills of fuel import and running cost of vehicles. The Power minister Piyush Goyal said,

“We are going to introduce electric vehicles in a very big way. We are going to make electric vehicles self-sufficient like UJALA. The idea is that by 2030, not a single petrol or diesel car should be sold in the country.”

Goyal was speaking at the CII Annual Session 2017 and according to him, government can support the electric motor industry in the initial phase, as it did for Maruti and today it is earning 30 percent profit.

The minister also told that NITI Aayog and Ministry of Heavy Industries are working together to devise a policy for promoting electric vehicles. He stated that consumers would like to purchase electric vehicles when they would find them cost effective in comparison to fuel vehicles.

When asked about offshore wind projects, he said that they were like R&D projects and he advised that big players like NTPC should take initiative and invest in these projects which would help this segment in growing.

According to him, the energy consumption in India has increased by 6.5% CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) in the last 3 years, which is more than the increase that took place in the last 10 years. Piyush Goyal said,

“Through UJALA, the LED distribution programme, we have already seen about 500 million LED bulbs sold in the last two years. My job is to improve India’s energy efficiency to reduce consumption wherever it is wasteful and ensure that demand is met fully.”

He further adds that UDAY is also about financial discipline and not just financial re-engineering and it is meant for reviving the discoms which are burdened with debt.
