This is a proud moment for every Indian as IIT-Bombay is now among the top 200 institutes of the world. On Thursday, QS World Rankings have been declared which show that IIT-Bombay has taken a leap of 40 positions and moved upwards to the 179th position from the 219th spot of last year.
Till now, IIT-Delhi and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, were the only two Indian institutes which were featured in the top 200 institutes of the world and they are also appearing from the last two years only. If we talk only about the Indian institutes, IIT Delhi stands first with the 172nd position, IIT-Mumbai is second with the 179th rank while IISc comes third with the 190th rank.
There are four parameters which are taken into consideration while calculating the position and IIT-Bombay has performed well in three of these parameters. This year, its overall score was 49.7 while last year, it was 44.6. It has performed really well when it comes to academic reputation as the institute scored 62.3 this year in comparison to 45.7 which it got last year.
This year, the faculty-student ratio scored 32.1 points while last year, it was just 25. What’s more, citations per faculty jumped to 50.8 while last year, it was 48.5. One parameter where its score fell was employer-reputation; it scored 77.9 while last year, it was 79.1. Despite this dip, this factor played an important role in getting higher rank for the institute.
Devang Khakhar, the director of IIT-Bombay, feels that his institute has performed well in all the parameters as he says,
“We started off at a low pace in the QS rankings and have gradually gone up. The research has improved and our faculty numbers have gone up too. There are more international students on the campus and the numbers will gradually increase, and hopefully, we will do better than this year’s performance.”
If we talk about the universities, Delhi University is in the top 500 universities of the world while Mumbai and Pune have gone in the range of 801-1000 from 700 of last year.
Great going by the Indian Institutes!
