Education is very important for every person irrespective of gender and a girl from Mullickpur Mandirbazar, rural Bengal, has taken such a bold step that will definitely motivate other girls to live their dreams.
We are talking about a 16-yr old Muslim girl named Mampi Khatoon who was forcibly married in 2015 by her parents; however, when her husband and in-laws denied her wish to study further, she divorced her husband.
As per a report in TOI, the incident took place just 55 km away from the capital city Kolkata. At the time of marriage, Mampi’s husband and her in-laws agreed to let her continue studies but after marriage, they rejected her wish. Nevertheless, Mampi was not in the mood to let go her desires and she somehow passed her Madhyamik exam this year. When she asked them to let her pursue studies further by taking admission in Krishnachandrapur High School at Mathurapur, her husband and in-laws refused. After this, Mampi left the house and returned to her parents’ home.
The family was forcing Mampi to change her decision and when she was not able to bear it anymore, she went near to her husband and screamed “talaq” three times. Resolute Mampi said, “I have to get on with life and carve my path just like Malala did.”
Mampi’s decision has been praised by many but some people are upset with it too. Maulana Abdul Mannan of Masoompara Masjid said, “Only a man had the right to give talaq to a woman. A woman pronouncing talaq is not acceptable.”
A social activist Miratun Nahar supported Mampi’s decision and said,
“In this case, the woman has sought divorce for pursuing studies. Even if the girl doesn’t satisfy the grounds laid down in the Sharia laws for seeking divorce, I believe she has reasonable grounds to do so.”
She also said that as per the Sharia law, a woman can also demand the termination of a marriage contract which is called “khula.”
