There is no denying the fact that Hindi is the most spoken language in India and there has always been a rift between Hindi speakers and non-Hindi speakers on the matter of making Hindi the national language of India.
Recently, Sushma Swaraj has announced that from now on, passports will be bilingual which means that the text will be available in both English and Hindi. This step definitely increases the importance of Hindi. What’s more, the BJP leader and Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu emphasized on the significance of learning Hindi on Saturday.
Just few hours after Naidu’s speech, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor posted on Facebook that Hindi is not our national language. Here is what he posted, “Hindi is NOT our national language. It is India’s most widely-spoken language and useful to know. But it cannot and should not be imposed on anyone.”

Reactions got flooded on this post of Shashi and some supported him by declaring that learning Hindi is a waste of time and instead, people should learn English as it is spoken all over the world, while few were of the opinion that nothing should be imposed, whether it is food, language or anything else. Shashi got criticized as well by many who alleged that he was protesting against Hindi because a BJP leader laid importance on its learning.

Earlier while attending an event in Sabarmati Ashram, Naidu talked about making country’s “matribhasha” popular and said that undue importance is being given to English. The minister was of the opinion that a kid should be taught mother language (Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, etc.) also apart from Hindi.
