On one hand, Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to prohibit cattle slaughter and beef consumption in India, especially in the northern states of the country, and on the other, Goa’s Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is assuring the assembly that his government will make proper arrangements to combat the shortage of red meat in Goa.
On Tuesday, the former defence minister and present CM of Goa told the assembly that Goa Meat Complex at Ponda, which is 40km from Panaji, arranges 2,000 kg of beef daily by slaughtering cattle.
He further said,
“The rest of the meat is met by Karnataka. The government does not have any intention to restrict bringing animals for slaughter at the Goa Meat Complex from the neighbouring state.”
Talking about rise in the demand of red meat on holidays, CM Parrikar said,
“We have not closed the option to stop getting meat from Belgaum (in Karnataka) to ensure that there is no shortage. I can assure you that inspection of beef from neighbouring stage will be done by a proper medical doctor those who are authorised to do it, rather than by others.”

Congress along with other opposition parties didn’t leave the chance to talk about the double standards of BJP on the matter of beef. Rajiv Shukla, the Congress MP, said,
“BJP CM of Goa saying there won’t be a shortage of beef in the state is hilarious and ironical.”
The Goa unit of BJP never supported the party’s movement of banning the cattle slaughter and beef consumption as beef is an important part of state’s food culture.
