The five times IPL champions Mumbai Indians is one step away from playing the finals of the IPL 2023 as it defeated Lucknow Super Giants in the eliminator match which was played yesterday at MA Chidmabaram Stadium, Chennai. Now MI will clash against Gujarat Titans on May 26 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, and the winner of this match will play against Chennai Super Kings in the final match of the IPL 2023 which will be played on May 28 at Ahmedabad.
MI decided to bat first after winning the toss but its openers Ishan Kishan (15 runs, 12 balls, 3 fours) and Rohit Sharma (11 runs, 10 balls, 1 four & 1 six) failed in providing a big start. However, Cameron Green (41 runs, 23 balls, 6 fours & 1 six) and Suryakumar Yadav (33 runs, 20 balls, 2 fours & 2 sixes) stabilized the innings and kept the score board ticking as well, the middle order batters also made small but useful contributions and MI posted a total of 182/8 in the stipulated 20 overs.
The pick of the bowlers for LSG was Naveen-ul-Haq as he took 4 wickets in 4 overs and gave 38 runs, Yash Thakur took 3 wickets and he conceded 34 runs in his 4 overs.
Though the target was achievable for LSG yet superb bowling from MI bowler Akash Madhwal who took 5 wickets and conceded only 5 runs in 3.3 overs made it impossible for LSG to win this match. The highest scorer for the Lucknow team was Marcus Stoinis who scored 40 runs (27 balls, 5 fours & 1 six), LSG fell short by 81 runs as the whole team bundled out for 101 in 16.3 overs.
