The clouds of uncertainty in regard to India’s participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 have got clear now as the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) informed the ICC (International Cricket Council) that there is no chance of team India travelling to Pakistan for the tournament.
The ICC officially notified the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) of India’s decision via email, which was subsequently forwarded to the Pakistani government. The PCB is facing a significant challenge after India confirmed its refusal to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy and this development may lead to critical decisions regarding Pakistan’s participation in the event.
According to a report, there is speculation that Pakistan may withdraw from hosting and competing in the global tournament if the ICC decides to organise the tournament in a hybrid mode.
The PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that the board will not propose a hybrid model for hosting the competition. The government is now evaluating options, including the possibility of withdrawing Pakistan’s cricket team from the Champions Trophy entirely.
In parallel, some reports suggested that the ICC has proposed a hybrid hosting model to the PCB. This model would allow the PCB to retain the full hosting fees and the majority of match fixtures despite India’s refusal to travel. The ICC’s assurance could mean significant revenue for the PCB if this arrangement is accepted.
However, if the PCB decides against hosting due to the current situation, the ICC may consider relocating the tournament to South Africa, as mentioned by a source familiar with the discussions.
Meanwhile, Pakistani media have explored potential government responses, such as advising the PCB to boycott playing against India in all the ICC and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) events. Another option under discussion includes legal recourse against the ICC and the BCCI through the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Geneva.
