Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach has started with mixed results, as the team faces its next major challenge, i.e., the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. After a disappointing whitewash against New Zealand that ended India’s 12-year unbeaten streak in Test series at home, Gambhir now leads a team missing key players like Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Mohammad Shami. The five-match series begins on Friday in Perth, testing his ability to create a balanced XI capable of overcoming the Aussies on their home soil.
With seasoned players like Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Md. Shami sidelined, India’s squad lacks experience, especially in the Australian conditions and India’s loss in the Test series against New Zealand has added pressure on Gambhir and his coaching staff to deliver strong performances.
What may make things worse is the fact that the Australian pitches are traditionally fast and bouncy and the Indian batters and bowlers are not accustomed to such conditions.
However, former Australian cricketer Mike Hussey has expressed confidence in Gautam Gambhir’s ability to instill fighting spirit and competitiveness in the Indian team. During an interview, Mike Hussey said that Gambhir has a proven record of being a fierce competitor during his playing days and he still has that hunger for victory even as a coach.
Mike Hussey highlighted how Gambhir’s competitive nature and winning mentality could inspire the team. He is sure that Gambhir’s personality will certainly come through in the manner he coaches and it is something which is needed when you play in the Australian conditions because it is not easy to come Australia and compete with a strong Australian team.
Mike Hussey also drew parallels between Gambhir and former coach Ravi Shastri, crediting Shastri for fostering a “hard edge” in the Indian dressing room. He expects Gambhir to continue that legacy, leveraging his own positive memories of playing successfully in Australia.
Despite missing some star players, India’s squad includes proven performers like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, who could play key roles in challenging Australia. Gambhir’s ability to strategically utilise these players while mentoring young talent will be crucial in determining India’s success.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has always been fiercely contested and Gambhir’s first major overseas assignment as the coach will undoubtedly define his early legacy.
