The Indian cricket team may have lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 1-3 but one Indian player who outshone everyone was Jasprit Bumrah. The Indian star pacer was adjudged as the Player of the Series for his superb performance and his leadership skills were also praised by fans and many former cricketers as well.
The former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist lavished huge praises on Jasprit Bumrah, as Gilly suggested that the 31 years old Indian cricketer could have reduced Don Bradman’s legendary batting average of 99.94, had he faced him.
Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional in the recently concluded five-match Test series between India and Australia, playing all the five matches and taking 32 wickets, the most by an Indian bowler in a Test series played away from home. Despite his outstanding performance, India managed only one win in Australia and lost the series by 1-3.
In a podcast discussion with the former England captain Michael Vaughan, Gilchrist lauded Bumrah’s efforts in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He said that no numerical rating could do justice to Bumrah’s greatness, stating that Bumrah would have drastically lowered Don Bradman’s average had they competed. Vaughan echoed Gilchrist’s admiration, giving Bumrah a perfect 10/10 rating and calling him one of the greatest sportsmen of all time.
During the Test series, Bumrah set records for the most Test wickets by an Indian bowler in Australia and became India’s most successful Test bowler in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). Additionally, he broke the record for the most wickets taken by a fast bowler in a single edition of the World Test Championship.
Expected to take on a leadership role for India’s Test team in the near future, Bumrah captained India in the first and fifth Tests of the series, leading the team to a 295-run victory in the series opener which was played at Optus Stadium in Perth.
However, the Indian pacer was not able to bowl in Australia’s second innings due to back spasm and it is being said that he may not be available in the group matches of the Champions Trophy 2025 due to his back issue.
