An unusual incident unfolded in Nagpur ahead of the first ODI between India and England when a member of the Indian cricket team’s support staff was mistaken for a fan by local police. Raghavendra, better known as Raghu, a throwdown specialist who has been an integral part of team India for years, was briefly stopped from entering the team hotel.

In a video that has been widely shared on social media, Raghu was seen making his way toward the team members as they collected their luggage from the bus when a couple of policemen blocked his path. Some onlookers who recognised him tried to explain that he was a part of the coaching staff and had just stepped off the team bus. Despite the mix-up, Raghu, known for his calm demeanor, handled the situation with a smile and was eventually allowed to proceed.

For those unfamiliar with his journey, Raghu has played a crucial role in Indian cricket for over a decade, earning praise from several high-profile figures, including former head coach Ravi Shastri.

Originally from Karnataka, he left home at a young age with aspirations of becoming a cricketer, despite lacking family support. His early days were spent in difficult conditions, finding shelter at a bus stand, a temple and even a graveyard in Hubli. His talent in grade cricket eventually caught the attention of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, which provided him with accommodation. However, a hand injury forced him to abandon his playing career, leading him to take up coaching instead.

Meanwhile, the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma is set to face England in a three-match ODI series beginning tomorrow (6 Feb) in Nagpur. This marks India’s return to one-day cricket after their last outing in Sri Lanka in August. The series is expected to serve as valuable preparation for the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy, which kicks off on February 19.

All the best to team India!
