The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has become one of the most popular test series among cricket fans because of the intense rivalry between the cricket teams of India and Australia and the number of Indians who went to watch test matches in Australia during the BGT also proves this statement correct.
The Cricket Australia (CA) revealed on Thursday that over 6,000 Indian fans traveled to Australia to witness the 2024-25 five-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The series saw Australia emerge victorious with a 3-1 win, reclaiming the coveted trophy after a decade.
According to the CA, thousands of Indian supporters secured tickets, either directly or through friends and family based in Australia. This marked a six-fold increase in ticket sales from India compared to the previous Border-Gavaskar series held in Australia in 2018-19. The total attendance for the series reached an impressive 837,879, making it the fourth most attended Test series in Australia and the most watched non-Ashes series.
Nearly 5% of all ticket purchases came from overseas travelers, with Indian fans leading international sales ahead of supporters from the UK and the USA. The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was particularly popular among Indian visitors, who accounted for more than two-thirds of the tickets sold for that match alone.
Cricket Australia’s executive general manager of events and operations, Joel Morrison, expressed satisfaction over the growing influence of Indian supporters. He acknowledged that the passion of Indian fans contributed to the electrifying atmosphere at stadiums throughout the summer. He emphasised the CA’s commitment to strengthening its bond with cricket enthusiasts worldwide while enhancing the experience for both local and traveling fans.
The influx of Indian spectators also underlined Australia’s role in promoting tourism and trade opportunities. Morrison noted that the increasing number of visiting fans highlights the country’s growing appeal as a cricketing destination, fostering economic benefits beyond the sport.
Looking ahead, the Indian teams will return to Australia in the 2025-26 season. The men’s squad will play three ODIs and five T20Is between October and November 2025, while the women’s team will feature in a multi-format series spanning seven matches in February-March 2026.
During the recently concluded series, India had a promising start with a win in Perth but ultimately suffered defeats in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, leading to Australia reclaiming the trophy after a decade of Indian dominance.
