Indian cricket has witnessed remarkable leadership in the ICC tournaments, with captains achieving significant winning streaks that have propelled the team to global success. Notably, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni have set and surpassed records for consecutive wins in these prestigious events.
Rohit Sharma: A New Benchmark in Leadership
Rohit Sharma’s captaincy has been instrumental in India’s recent dominance in white-ball cricket. Under his guidance, India secured back-to-back ICC titles, winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. This achievement marked the first time India clinched consecutive global titles, joining the ranks of West Indies and Australia in accomplishing this rare feat.
During these tournaments, Rohit led India to impressive 13 consecutive victories in the ICC events, surpassing MS Dhoni’s previous record of 12. This winning streak began with an unbeaten run in the T20 World Cup 2024, where India won all eight matches, including the final against South Africa. The momentum continued in the Champions Trophy 2025, with five consecutive wins culminating in a four-wicket triumph over New Zealand in the final.
MS Dhoni: The Architect of Consistency
MS Dhoni, renowned for his calm demeanor and strategic acumen, held the record for the most consecutive wins by an Indian captain in the ICC tournaments until Rohit Sharma’s recent feat. MS Dhoni’s 12-match winning streak spanned from the T20 World Cup in 2012 through the Champions Trophy in 2013 and into the T20 World Cup in 2014. This period included notable victories that underscored India’s dominance in limited-overs cricket under his leadership.
