Indian cricketer Deepti Sharma has filed a police complaint against fellow player Arushi Goel, accusing her of fraud and theft amounting to over Rs 25 lakh. The two athletes who have shared team space in domestic and franchise cricket are now at the center of a serious legal dispute. According to the complaint, Arushi allegedly exploited Deepti over two years by repeatedly requesting financial help, citing urgent family needs.
The matter escalated last month when Arushi reportedly broke into Deepti’s flat in Agra, changed the locks and stole gold and silver jewellery along with more than Rs 2 lakh in foreign currency. The case was brought to light by Deepti’s brother Sumit Sharma who approached the Sadar police station.
Preliminary findings lent credibility to the allegations, leading to the registration of an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to theft, housebreaking, criminal breach of trust and provocation with intent to breach peace.
Arushi Goel, who recently featured in the Senior Women Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy and also represented India A during England’s tour, is a junior clerk with Indian Railways and plays for UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League. Despite her on-field appearances, she now faces serious legal consequences.
The situation has caused considerable emotional strain for Deepti Sharma who is currently engaged in national team preparations. As she focuses on the upcoming tour of England, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs starting June 28 at Trent Bridge, the off-field turmoil presents an unfortunate distraction at a crucial juncture in her cricketing calendar.
