Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Kapil Dev expressed his hopes for a successful tour, wishing the squad the best and expressing confidence that they will return victorious.
Kapil Dev also weighed in on Jasprit Bumrah’s decision to not pursue Test captaincy. Acknowledging that it’s a personal choice, Kapil Dev noted that for him, the needs of the team should always come first, subtly suggesting that leadership is about putting the team ahead of individual preferences.
India will enter the series without some of its most iconic players. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have both stepped away from the Test format and Ravichandran Ashwin also bid farewell to international cricket midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. These absences mark a significant transition for the team which is now ranked fourth in the Test rankings.
Despite the shifting lineup, Kapil Dev urged Shubman Gill to play without the burden of expectations. He encouraged the new captain to express himself freely on the field, stressing that being natural and confident is more important than trying to live up to outside pressures.
Reflecting on the rebranding of the series from the historic Pataudi Trophy to the new Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Kapil Dev admitted it felt somewhat unusual. Yet, he took it in stride, adding that such changes are part of the evolving nature of cricket. For him, what truly matters is the quality of the game itself, regardless of what the series is called.
