The Indian cricketer KL Rahul has opened up about his journey of rediscovering his ideal batting position after spending a significant part of the last few years adapting to various roles in the Indian Test lineup. Having batted across the order, from opening to as low as No. 6, KL Rahul expressed a sense of relief and satisfaction in returning to the top of the order during the first Test against England at Headingley.
Reflecting on his evolving role within the team, Rahul admitted that he had almost lost track of where he belonged to. He said that over the past couple of years, he had forgotten what his position was and what he truly felt comfortable doing. Yet, he emphasised that he embraced the various responsibilities handed to him, as they kept the game engaging and motivated him to work even harder. This mindset helped him challenge himself and enjoy the process, even as he floated between different spots in the lineup.
Now back to opening, Rahul said the position feels familiar, as it was something he had grown up doing and had taken on in the early years of his international career. Being reinstated in that role made him feel at home again and he expressed happiness at performing that duty for the team.
Rahul’s return to opening was backed by a commanding performance in the second innings, where he struck a fine 137. Alongside Rishabh Pant who scored a quick 118, he shared a 195-run stand for the fourth wicket that revived India’s innings after the early loss of captain Shubman Gill. Their efforts helped India post 364 and set a formidable target of 371 for England.
With the match finely balanced going into the final day, Rahul addressed the media at stumps, expressing optimism about India’s chances of securing a win. He said the team would give themselves the best opportunity to claim all 10 English wickets and seal a 1-0 lead in the series. England’s openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett had started strongly, reducing the target by 21 runs before stumps on Day 4.
With Rahul back in his favored role and India poised for a decisive outcome, the final day promises to be a gripping conclusion to a tightly contested Test.
