Indian cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal’s debut Test innings on the English soil began with roaring applause, as the young opener marked his first appearance in England with a classy century. Scoring 101 off 159 balls after India were put in to bat at Headingley, he looked every bit the rising star.
However, by the end of the five-day contest, one that saw India slump to a five-wicket defeat, his celebration turned to criticism, as fans turned against him over a string of crucial dropped catches and a gesture that many saw as ill-timed.
While much of the post-match scrutiny was directed at India’s twin batting collapses and their lackluster bowling support beyond Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s fielding efforts or the lack thereof, emerged as a key reason for their downfall.
Over the course of the match, India dropped a total of eight catches, many of them at pivotal moments, which allowed England to stay competitive and eventually take control. Four of those chances were put down by Yashasvi Jaiswal alone, a disastrous statistic that overshadowed his earlier brilliance with the bat.
Jasprit Bumrah, who led the bowling attack with exceptional skill and claimed five wickets in the first innings, appeared visibly frustrated as fielding failures wasted his efforts. Despite his heroics, the missed chances helped England reduce their first-innings deficit to just six runs, an outcome that would later prove critical.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s woes did not end with his dropped catches. On the final day, as India inched toward a record defeat, his decision to engage with the English crowd and break into a dance routine sparked fresh outrage. Fans, already reeling from the team’s poor display, took to social media in droves, expressing anger at what they saw as a lack of seriousness and awareness from the young cricketer during a critical moment in the game.

The defeat itself was historic and not in a way India would have hoped. England’s successful chase of 371 handed them a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, while India became the first team in Test cricket history to lose a match after registering five individual centuries. Rishabh Pant struck two of those, while KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal each contributed one. This loss also marked a disappointing start for India in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle.
Under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, the visitors now find themselves needing a swift course correction. With the second Test scheduled to begin at Edgbaston in a week, India will have to regroup quickly, address their fielding frailties and hope for a more consistent performance across all the departments.
