Shah Rukh Khan, one of the most beloved and influential actors in Indian cinema, has captivated audiences for over three decades with his charm, versatility and iconic roles. Known as the “King of Bollywood”, his career includes blockbusters, critical acclaim and global stardom. Yet, national recognition in the form of a National Award had always eluded him, until now.
On August 1, at the 71st National Film Awards, Shah Rukh Khan was announced as the winner of the National Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Jawan. What made this win even more special was that the announcement came from director Ashutosh Gowariker, the same filmmaker who directed Swades, a film for which Shah Rukh was widely expected to win the same award nearly 21 years ago.
In Swades, Shah Rukh portrayed Mohan Bhargava, a NASA engineer who returns to India and reconnects with his roots. The film remains one of his most acclaimed performances, offering a thoughtful and emotional look at India’s socio-cultural challenges. Despite the critical praise, the Best Actor award in 2004 went to Saif Ali Khan for Hum Tum, a romantic comedy. The decision disappointed many fans and critics who felt Shah Rukh’s performance was overlooked. At the time, jury head Sudhir Mishra explained that Saif’s performance had a unique ease and freshness. Shah Rukh, though gracious, had publicly joked that he felt he should have received the award.
Now, two decades later, the long wait is finally over. His win for Jawan, where he plays a dual role, was met with overwhelming joy from fans. Many took to social media to celebrate what they called a “full-circle moment”, especially because it was Ashutosh Gowariker who announced the victory. Ashutosh Gowariker himself described it as historic, noting how remarkable it is for one of the biggest stars of Indian cinema to receive such recognition in a year when he delivered not one but three major films.
Following the announcement, Shah Rukh Khan released a heartfelt video message to thank his fans, directors and family. Though recovering from an injury on the set of his upcoming film King, he took out time to express his gratitude. He gave a special mention to the directors and writers of 2023, especially Jawan director Atlee, and lovingly acknowledged his wife and children for supporting his all-consuming passion for cinema.
For both Shah Rukh Khan and his admirers, this National Award marks not just a win but the recognition of a lifetime of work that has shaped the very landscape of Indian cinema.
