In the immediate aftermath of the IPL 2025, speculation erupted across social media suggesting a major player trade between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. At the heart of the rumours was Sanju Samson, the experienced captain and wicketkeeper-batter for Rajasthan whose name surfaced as a potential candidate to replace the legendary MS Dhoni in Chennai’s squad.
With MS Dhoni’s celebrated IPL career nearing its end, CSK is believed to be actively seeking a reliable long-term successor behind the stumps, one with both batting prowess and leadership qualities. Given Sanju Samson’s stature and his multifaceted role at RR, he was seen as a logical fit.
However, recent developments have firmly dismissed any notions of such a transfer. According to a report, Rajasthan Royals have made it clear that they are not considering trading Sanju Samson or any other player, for that matter. The franchise appears determined to maintain stability within its core group, viewing Samson not only as an integral part of the team but as their unquestioned leader.
Clarifying the team’s stance, a source emphasised that Sanju Samson remains central to the Royals’ plans and is firmly entrenched as the captain of the side. The report also noted that although Sanju Samson’s name has been linked with other franchises including Kolkata Knight Riders, there is no intention from RR’s side to engage in any trade negotiations involving him.
The 30 years old cricketer had a relatively short stint in the IPL 2025 due to an index finger injury, which limited him to just nine matches. Despite the setback, he managed to score 285 runs at an impressive strike rate of 140.39. During his absence, the captaincy responsibilities were temporarily handed over to Riyan Parag.
Sanju Samson’s journey in the IPL has been eventful. He began his career with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, although he did not get a chance to play. After being released, he was picked up by Rajasthan Royals, making his debut against Punjab Kings. He remained with the Royals for four seasons before moving to Delhi Capitals during the two years RR was suspended. In 2018, he returned to the Royals who bought him at his base price of ₹18 crore. His rise to captaincy came in 2021 and he marked the occasion with a brilliant century in his very first match as skipper.
Over the years, Sanju Samson has built a solid reputation in the league. With 177 IPL appearances to his name, he has scored 4,704 runs, including three centuries and 26 half-centuries. His leadership and batting have become crucial pillars for Rajasthan, making it unsurprising that the franchise remains firm in its decision to retain him.
While CSK fans may have entertained the idea of Sanju Samson donning yellow and stepping into Dhoni’s shoes, for now, Rajasthan Royals are not ready to part ways with their leader. The message is clear — Sanju Samson is not just a player, they see him as the future of the franchise.
