Glenn Maxwell may not have contributed much with the bat in the first T20I against South Africa but he still found a way to leave his mark on the match. On Sunday, August 10, the Australian all-rounder pulled off a spectacular catch in the final over, helping secure a 17-run win for his side and giving Australia a 1-0 lead in the home series.
The moment quickly went viral, with fans drawing comparisons to Suryakumar Yadav’s celebrated catch in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, coincidentally, also against South Africa.
The incident unfolded on the second ball of the last over, bowled by Ben Dwarshuis. South Africa’s left-handed opener and wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton attempted a big shot that seemed destined to clear the ropes. Maxwell, however, intervened with remarkable athleticism, not only denying the certain six but also completing a clean catch to end Ryan Rickelton’s innings on seven runs.

The victory marked Australia’s ninth consecutive win in T20 internationals, a first in the country’s cricketing history. The streak began on November 14, 2024, under the captaincy of Josh Inglis, when Australia defeated Pakistan by 29 runs in Brisbane. They followed up with two more wins against Pakistan, then swept the West Indies 5-0 in July 2025 before opening the South Africa series with another triumph.
While the record for the most consecutive T20I wins belongs to Uganda with 17, followed by Spain with 15 and Japan with 14, Australia’s achievement stands out among Test-playing nations. The only longer streak by a major cricket nation came from India that won 12 matches in a row between November 2021 and February 2022.
For Australia, Glenn Maxwell’s catch was not just a highlight reel moment, it was a reminder of the game-changing value he brings, even on a day when the runs didn’t come. With two matches left in the series, the Aussies will look to extend their unbeaten run and edge closer to the global record.
