The light-hearted rivalry between former cricketers Wasim Jaffer and Michael Vaughan shows no signs of slowing down. After England’s crushing defeat to South Africa in the first ODI at Headingley, Wasim Jaffer once again found the perfect opportunity to poke fun at his old sparring partner.

England’s loss was not only a blow to their pride but also saw them slip to number eight in the ICC men’s ODI team rankings. Picking up on this, Wasim Jaffer cheekily remarked on social media that England’s new position seemed to go against the “spirit of cricket” and wondered aloud if the ICC should investigate. His comment was a clear jibe at England’s frequent emphasis on the so-called spirit of the game, a subject that has often landed them in heated debates.

Here is what Wasim Jaffer tweeted, “England at No. 8… surely against the spirit of cricket. ICC should look into this. @MichaelVaughan”

In recent years, England has been at the center of multiple controversies involving the spirit of cricket. The most notable was in 2022 when Deepti Sharma ran out England batter Charlie Dean at the non-striker’s end, an act widely accepted under the rules but fiercely criticised by English commentators and media. Similar debates have also flared up in men’s cricket whenever opponents have challenged England, with many fans outside the country accusing the team of using the spirit argument selectively.

The defeat to South Africa only made the banter sting more. After being asked to bat first under cloudy skies, England folded meekly for 131 in just 24.3 overs. From a steady 82 for 2, the hosts collapsed dramatically, losing eight wickets for just 49 runs. Jamie Smith stood out with a gritty 54 but no other batter offered resistance.

South Africa’s bowlers took full advantage of the conditions. Keshav Maharaj led the charge with figures of 4 for 22, while Wiaan Mulder picked up 3 for 33. For England’s new captain Harry Brook, it was a nightmare start, marking one of the heaviest defeats of the team in recent times.

The chase was never in doubt as Aiden Markram tore into England’s attack with a whirlwind 23-ball half-century before finishing on 86 from 61 balls. England debutant Sonny Baker had a forgettable outing, going for 76 runs with the ball and then falling first ball while batting. Adil Rashid briefly delayed the inevitable with three wickets but Dewald Brevis sealed the win in style with a six as South Africa triumphed by seven wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

For England, the humiliation on the field was matched by the trolling online, with Wasim Jaffer once again proving that when it comes to banter, he rarely misses an opening.
