At just the start of his international career, Abhishek Sharma has already achieved what many dream of — standing tall against the world’s best and rising swiftly to the top of the ICC T20I rankings. With his fearless stroke play and calm attitude under pressure, the young left-hander has quickly become one of the brightest hopes of India. But even for someone used to conquering challenges, what he witnessed at the Melbourne Cricket Ground left him in awe.
In the second T20I against Australia, Abhishek Sharma faced Josh Hazlewood who delivered a spell that reminded everyone why he is regarded as one of the finest fast bowlers of his generation. Josh Hazlewood’s four overs of relentless accuracy and swing dismantled India’s top order, leaving them struggling at 49 for 5 after eight overs. His figures of 3 for 13 at an astonishing economy rate of just 3.2 turned the game firmly in Australia’s favor.
Amid the chaos, Abhishek Sharma’s 68 off 37 balls stood out as a rare act of defiance. His knock not only gave India a fighting total of 125 but also showcased his maturity and hunger to perform against world-class opposition. He admitted after the match that Josh Hazlewood’s control and precision took him by surprise.
Having watched the Australian pacer dominate in the ODIs earlier, Abhishek Sharma said that he knew what was coming but experiencing it firsthand was something else entirely. He called it a new kind of challenge, one that tested his confidence and adaptability as a batter who likes to attack.
When told that Josh Hazlewood would not be part of the remaining matches, Abhishek Sharma couldn’t hide his reaction. He smiled, saying that while facing such a bowler was never easy, it was a test he enjoyed. For him, going up against the best in the world is part of the journey, something every batter must face to grow stronger.

Australia, with that clinical win in Melbourne following a washout in Canberra, now lead the five-match series 1-0. The teams move next to Hobart for the third T20I on Sunday, where India will hope to bounce back and Abhishek Sharma, carrying both lessons and confidence from Melbourne, will once again be at the heart of their fight.
