Sometimes a single match can shake a team and its fans, and England’s opening Test of the Ashes in Perth did exactly that. The game ended in just two days, with Australia beating England by eight wickets. Their bold, attacking style, popularly known as “Bazball”, fell apart under pressure, leaving the players and supporters disappointed.

England’s defeat came after two sudden batting collapses and a stunning 69-ball century from Australia’s Travis Head. With four Tests still left in the series, England needs to improve their game in a big manner if they want to reclaim the Ashes. The next challenge will be a day-night Test in Brisbane on December 4, giving them a chance to reset quickly.
As criticism poured in from back home, England head coach Brendon McCullum stepped forward to ask fans not to lose hope. He encouraged everyone to “keep the faith”, reminding supporters that this style of play has also helped the team believe in themselves during difficult moments. He admitted that there are times when their approach does not work but insisted that abandoning their mindset after one setback is not the answer.

Brendon McCullum stressed the importance of staying calm and sticking together. He said that being one Test down does not change the team’s belief in their strategy or their ability to fight back, adding that they have found their way out of difficult situations before.
England’s record in Australia has been a painful one in recent years. Since last winning the Ashes there 15 years ago, they have lost 14 Tests, drawn two and won none. Perth felt like a real chance to break that streak. After a shaky start, England bowled Australia out for just 132 in response to their 172 and were in a good position at 65-1 in their second innings. But another dramatic collapse handed control back to Australia who chased down the target of 205 comfortably.

Despite the disappointment, Brendon McCullum’s message remains clear — England must regroup, trust their process and find a way back into the contest, something they have managed before and hope to do again as the series continues.
