The selection of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL 2026 mini-auction has unexpectedly turned into a sensitive talking point, drawing reactions that go far beyond cricket. With political tensions rising between India and Bangladesh, questions are now being raised about whether the left-arm pacer should feature in the upcoming IPL season.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has chosen a cautious approach while addressing the issue. Speaking from Dubai, where he has been for the past few weeks, Kaif made it clear that he does not have complete information about the situation and would rather not offer a personal opinion. According to him, decisions of this nature fall entirely under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has experience handling complex situations involving international players and large tournaments.
Mustafizur Rahman was picked up by three-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a significant sum of Rs 9.2 crore during the mini-auction. However, his signing came at a time when relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained following violent incidents targeting members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh. In recent weeks, reports of mob violence and ki*lings have raised serious concerns about communal safety, leading to heightened emotions and political reactions in India.
Several political figures have publicly criticised KKR and even pointed fingers at co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, accusing the franchise of ignoring national sentiment while making their auction choice. However, it later emerged that Shah Rukh Khan was not present at the auction in Abu Dhabi. The final bid for Mustafizur Rahman was made by KKR’s head coach Abhishek Nayar and CEO Venky Mysore after a competitive bidding battle with Chennai Super Kings.

Mohammed Kaif stressed that jumping to conclusions would not help anyone. He advised patience and pointed out that while discussions and opinions may circulate publicly, the actual decisions are taken behind closed doors by the governing body. According to him, the BCCI understands the gravity of such matters and knows how to balance sporting commitments with broader concerns.
As the debate continues, Mohammed Kaif’s message is clear — wait, watch and allow the authorities to take a call.
