Sometimes, the most powerful moments in cricket come after the final ball is bowled. On a tough Sunday night, when the result had already slipped away from India, Virat Kohli reminded everyone why he is admired far beyond his runs and records.
India’s star batter was seen walking over to the New Zealand camp moments after the third ODI ended, gifting his signed jersey to Daryl Mitchell and sharing a warm embrace. It was a quiet but meaningful gesture, coming after India’s 41-run defeat that sealed a 2-1 series loss in the three-match contest.

New Zealand laid the foundation earlier in the evening with a commanding batting performance. Daryl Mitchell continued his exceptional form against India, producing another outstanding century. His well-paced knock of 137 off 131 balls helped the visitors post an imposing total of 337 for eight after being asked to bat first.
Chasing a steep target, India once again turned to Virat Kohli. The former captain responded with a classic innings, registering his 54th ODI hundred. His 124 off 108 deliveries was built on patience, sharp shot selection and calm decision-making under pressure. While wickets kept falling at the other end, Kohli stood firm, keeping India’s hopes alive almost on his own.
Despite his efforts, the lack of support proved costly. Once Virat Kohli was dismissed late in the chase, India’s resistance faded quickly. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 296 in 46 overs, falling well short of the target.
Daryl Mitchell and Virat Kohli ended the series as the leading run-scorers, with the New Zealand batter finishing on top and earning the Player of the Series award after an extraordinary run of scores. The defeat carried added significance, as it marked the first time India had lost a home ODI series to New Zealand.
For Indian fans, it was a disappointing result, softened slightly by witnessing a reminder of Virat Kohli’s greatness, not just as a batter but as a sportsman who continues to lead by example even in defeat.
