The mood shifted from excitement to heartbreak in a matter of hours as Pakistan’s heavy defeat to India in their T20 World Cup Group A clash left fans stunned, angry and searching for answers.
What was expected to be a high-voltage contest at the R Premadasa Stadium instead turned into a one-sided affair. Pakistan crumbled while chasing 176, managing just 97/8 in 15.3 overs before eventually losing by 61 runs. As wickets kept falling, many supporters in the stands began walking out, unable to watch the collapse any longer.
The frustration wasn’t limited to the stadium. Popular Pakistani YouTuber Agha Mustafa Hassan released a fiery reaction video after the match, criticising the team’s confidence before the game. He suggested that all the pre-match talk had backfired badly and said that staying away from the match might have been less embarrassing than such a performance.
Another influencer Laiba Abbasi agreed with Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav’s recent remark that there is currently “no rivalry” between the two sides. Laiba Abbasi said that India is operating at a completely different level, describing them as a far more consistent and balanced team. She admitted that Pakistan is not close to matching India’s depth or overall quality at the moment.
Emotions spilled over dramatically on social media. A video of a Pakistani fan smashing his television after the defeat went viral. In a self-mocking caption, he wrote that India had beaten Pakistan again and that in his frustration, he ended up breaking his TV. In another clip, a group of people were seen throwing stones at a television in anger.
The same fan later posted again, saying he was shattered, ashamed and too shocked to speak. He shared emotional reaction videos on Facebook, showing just how deeply the loss had affected him. Another supporter was seen crying in Colombo after the final result.
Some fans tried to put their disappointment into words. Speaking to media, one supporter admitted he had hoped for at least a competitive match. However, he said Pakistan seemed to have no answer to India’s bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, and openly acknowledged India’s superiority.
Another fan directly questioned captain Babar Azam’s capability to perform in big matches. He argued that if Babar is called a “king” and is compared to Virat Kohli, he should perform like one. The fan even said Babar did not deserve a place in the team and called for major changes, pointing out that Pakistan struggled to chase even modest totals like 140, while 175 seemed impossible.

The tension extended to the administration as well. Mohsin Naqvi, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, was seen leaving the stadium shortly after the match. It remains unclear whether he spoke to the players afterward.
On the field, India delivered a complete performance. Ishan Kishan led the charge with a fluent 77 off 40 balls and was named the Player of the Match. Suryakumar Yadav contributed 32, while Shivam Dube added 27 to help India post 175/7.
For Pakistan, Saim Ayub took three wickets and Salman Ali Agha and Usman Tariq chipped in with one each. During the chase, Usman Khan scored 44 while Shaheen Afridi remained unbeaten on 23, but the innings never truly gathered momentum. India’s bowlers Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakaravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets each to seal the emphatic victory.
With this win, India advanced to the Super 8 stage. Pakistan, meanwhile, slipped below the USA on net run rate, leaving their campaign hanging by a thread and their fans fearing what lies ahead.
