A 72-run victory would make most captains smile from ear to ear. But Suryakumar Yadav is a different type of captain. After India’s dominant win over Zimbabwe, the Indian skipper made it clear that while the batting was near perfect, the bowling still needs sharpening, especially with a crucial clash against the West Indies coming up.

India piled up a massive 257 and delivered one of their best all-round batting displays of the tournament. Every batter in the top six crossed 20 runs and scored at a strike rate above 150, a record-setting team performance. It was a fearless, aggressive display that put Zimbabwe under immediate pressure.

However, the bowling did not completely satisfy Suryakumar Yadav. Zimbabwe responded with 184/6, showing fight despite the steep target. Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel were taken on by the Zimbabwe batters, while Shivam Dube conceded 46 runs in just two overs.

After the match, Suryakumar Yadav said the team effort with the bat was outstanding, with contributions coming right down to number seven. But he admitted that the bowlers could have been more precise in key moments. According to him, the team needed to be smarter with certain decisions and braver in crucial situations while defending such a big total.

At the same time, he was quick to acknowledge Zimbabwe’s effort. He praised their batters for pacing the innings well taking their time in the powerplay before accelerating intelligently. He felt they approached the chase impressively and deserved credit for the way they played.

Suryakumar Yadav would also remember that earlier in the tournament, when team India’s batting was inconsistent, it was the bowling attack that carried the team through the group stage.

One interesting factor behind India’s turnaround was a boost of positivity from the team’s video analyst. The skipper revealed that before this match, the team deliberately chose not to dwell on past performances, including their previous game in Ahmedabad. Instead, the analyst presented slides highlighting the players’ strong performances over the past year. That reminder of their strengths gave the squad clarity and renewed confidence.

The win keeps India in the race for the semi-finals. But there’s no room for complacency. To move ahead, they must beat the West Indies on Sunday and Suryakumar wants his team sharper, smarter and braver when that moment arrives.
