With the IPL 2026 around the corner, discussions are heating up, not just about players but also about bold decisions made during the auction. Former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath has openly questioned some of the major calls taken by Kolkata Knight Riders, especially their massive investment in Cameron Green.

KKR spent a staggering Rs 25.20 crore on the Australian all-rounder during the IPL 2026 auction, making him one of the most expensive buys. However, S. Badrinath believes this decision was driven more by hype than actual performance. In simpler terms, he feels Cameron Green hasn’t yet delivered match-winning performances in the IPL despite playing for teams like Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
He also pointed out that Cameron Green has not been in great form recently. His performances for Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 raised concerns, as he struggled to make an impact. According to Badrinath, the price tag does not match his current form or past IPL contributions and this could turn out to be a risky investment for KKR.
But Cameron Green isn’t the only concern. Badrinath also shared doubts about KKR’s leadership choice, calling skipper Ajinkya Rahane a weak link. Rahane, who was preferred as captain over players like Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh, is set to lead the team again this season. Badrinath believes the captaincy decision could impact the team’s performance.
He further highlighted that several of KKR’s key investments are already facing setbacks. Young pacer Harshit Rana has been ruled out, while Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana is doubtful for the season. On top of that, Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman is no longer part of the squad after the BCCI directed his release earlier this year.
All these factors, according to Subramaniam Badrinath, add uncertainty around KKR’s plans for the IPL 2026. With big money spent and key players unavailable, the team faces pressure to prove that their decisions will pay off on the field.
Do you agree with Subramaniam Badrinath? What is your take in this regard?
