When a team enters a season with big dreams and fails to deliver, questions are inevitable. That’s exactly what happened with Lucknow Super Giants and their captain Rishabh Pant.
At the IPL mega auction, Lucknow made headlines by spending a staggering ₹27 crore on Rishabh Pant, the highest price ever paid for a player in the history of the IPL. The franchise did not just invest money; they showed complete faith by appointing him as captain, clearly building their campaign around him.
However, the IPL 2025 didn’t go as planned. Lucknow Super Giants missed out on the playoffs for the second consecutive time, finishing seventh. Rishabh Pant, despite scoring 269 runs in 13 innings and even registering an unbeaten century, had an overall underwhelming season by expectations.
Despite the criticism, team owner Sanjiv Goenka stood firmly behind his captain. He pointed out that losing four key bowlers to injuries made the situation extremely difficult and any captain would have struggled under such circumstances. He emphasised that performances should be judged based on the resources available.
Addressing rumours about Rishabh Pant possibly being released, Sanjiv Goenka dismissed them with a laugh, suggesting that such speculation is often driven by social media chasing attention. He also praised Rishabh Pant’s attitude, describing him as honest, direct and fully committed to giving his 100 percent to the team, something he believes is all anyone can ask for.
Now, all eyes are on Lucknow’s opening match of the IPL 2026 against Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 1, where Rishabh Pant will face his former team and look to turn things around.
