Missing out on a World Cup spot can be tough for any cricketer and India’s wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma experienced exactly that ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. Despite being in contention as a backup wicketkeeper, he didn’t make the final 15-member squad. Instead, the selectors chose Sanju Samson, who had already secured his place as the first-choice wicketkeeper and opener, and brought back Ishan Kishan, who impressed everyone with a strong domestic season and led Jharkhand to a historic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.
While Jitesh Sharma was disappointed, he wasn’t alone during that moment. He revealed that Hardik Pandya was the first to reach out to him personally after the announcement. The message wasn’t just about missing out, it was about focusing on growth, both as a person and as a cricketer. Several other teammates including Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan and Shivam Dube also checked in to show their support.
Jitesh Sharma spoke highly of Hardik Pandya, describing him as one of the most generous and supportive people he has met. He shared how Hardik often goes out of his way to help others, even gifting cricket bats to young players without being asked. Jitesh Sharma himself once received such a gesture. He also appreciated Krunal Pandya, mentioning how both brothers are always ready to help when needed.
Having played for Baroda, Jitesh Sharma has interacted with Hardik multiple times and admires his sharp cricketing mind. He also praised Krunal for his clever approach on the field, especially his unusual tactic of bowling bouncers as a spinner, something that keeps batters guessing and creates pressure.
Even though Jitesh Sharma missed the World Cup squad, India went on to win the tournament for a record third time. For him, the experience became less about rejection and more about learning, support and staying ready for the next opportunity.
