The chants of “Lord Shardul” have echoed for years, often said in fun. But at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night, Shardul Thakur gave those chants a whole new meaning.
Playing his first match for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026, Shardul Thakur stepped up when it mattered the most and played a key role in his team’s six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders. His effort earned him the Player of the Match award, and more importantly, respect for his performance.

After the game, Shardul Thakur stated that he takes the nickname positively, not like a joke and sees it as a reflection of fans’ support and love, especially when he performs well.
The match itself was high-scoring, with KKR putting up a strong total of 220/4. At one stage, they looked completely in control, thanks to a powerful start led by Ajinkya Rahane. After Hardik Pandya chose to bowl first, KKR raced to 78/1 in the powerplay.
That’s when Shardul Thakur changed the game.
He first dismissed Finn Allen who mistimed a big shot. Soon after, he got rid of Cameron Green with a clever short ball. His biggest breakthrough came when he removed Ajinkya Rahane, shifting the momentum completely.
From a strong position, KKR suddenly found themselves slowing down. They were pulled back to 150/3 after 14 overs and couldn’t accelerate as expected, eventually finishing at 220/4.

For Shardul Thakur, this performance meant more than just numbers. He spoke about his long journey with Mumbai, recalling how he started as a net bowler back in 2010. Now, representing his home team on the big stage felt special. He also appreciated the strong backing from the team management and expressed hope of continuing with the franchise.
With over 100 wickets in the IPL, Shardul Thakur has built a reputation as a game-changing bowler and this performance only strengthened it.
