Ashwin Questions RR Captain Riyan Parag’s Mindset After Ravindra Jadeja Snub In KKR Defeat

The clash between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2026 Indian Premier League turned into a nail-biting finish but the post-match discussion has been just as intense as the game itself.

Chasing a competitive total, KKR held their nerve in the final over to secure a narrow win. Rinku Singh played a calm and crucial innings, scoring 53 runs from 34 balls and guiding the chase under pressure. He found strong support from Anukul Roy, who added a quick 29 off just 16 deliveries, helping KKR cross the finish line.

While the match delivered excitement till the very end, former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was not impressed with how RR captain Riyan Parag handled the closing stages. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin openly questioned Riyan Parag’s decisions, especially his choice of not using Ravindra Jadeja more in the final overs.

Ravindra Jadeja had been one of the standout performers with the ball, conceding very few runs and picking up two wickets in his spell. Ashwin felt that ignoring a bowler in such good form showed a lack of trust. He pointed out that while data and matchups are important in modern cricket, they should not completely replace instinct and confidence in experienced players.

Ashwin explained that even if statistics suggest certain matchups, a captain must also consider the rhythm and confidence of a bowler on the day. According to him, Jadeja was bowling well enough to be trusted in crucial moments, even against left-handed batters. He added that not giving him the ball sends the wrong message to the player and could affect his confidence in the long run.

The former spinner also highlighted a broader issue in team strategy. He said that if players start feeling they are not trusted in certain situations, they may stop pushing themselves to improve in those areas. Over time, this could weaken the team’s overall strength.

Ashwin further compared the situation to batting decisions, saying teams never hold back their best batters like Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant or Nicholas Pooran during crucial moments. In the same way, he argued, top bowlers should also be trusted to deliver under pressure.

He also questioned why an inexperienced bowler like Brijesh Sharma was given key overs, including the 18th and 20th, while a seasoned player like Jadeja was overlooked. According to Ashwin, even if the result had been the same, it would have been better to lose after giving one of the team’s best bowlers a chance to make an impact.

In the end, while KKR celebrated a thrilling victory, the spotlight remained on RR’s tactical choices, decisions that may have lasting implications beyond just one match.
