Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2026 title celebrations have been accompanied by some unwanted news, with batter Tim David receiving a one-match suspension for breaching the tournament’s Code of Conduct during the final against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
The punishment will take effect at the beginning of the IPL 2027 season, meaning Tim David will miss the first match of the next campaign regardless of which team he represents.
The IPL confirmed the sanction in an official statement, revealing that Tim David was fined 50 percent of his match fee and handed two Demerit Points for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.9 of the Code of Conduct. The rule covers incidents involving the inappropriate or dangerous throwing of a ball or any other piece of cricket equipment towards players, officials, umpires, match referees or any other person during a match.
According to the statement, the incident took place during the 10th over of Gujarat Titans’ innings. Tim David was found to have aggressively thrown an ice bag in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon. The Australian accepted responsibility for his actions and agreed to the punishment imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.
The incident carried greater consequences because it was not Tim David’s first disciplinary offence of the season. Earlier in the IPL 2026, he had already accumulated one Demerit Point in Match 20 and another two in Match 54. The latest breach added two more points to his record, taking his season tally to five Demerit Points.
Under IPL regulations, reaching that threshold results in an automatic one-match suspension. One of Tim David’s previous offences reportedly involved refusing to hand the ball back to the umpire during a league-stage match.

The suspension comes despite an excellent season with the bat. Tim David played a vital role in helping RCB successfully defend their IPL crown, providing valuable contributions in the finisher’s role. He scored 305 runs during the season at an impressive strike rate of 188.27, delivering the kind of impact teams expect from a lower-order power hitter.
RCB went on to defeat Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium to retain the IPL title. With no mega auction scheduled before the 2027 season, Tim David remains a strong candidate to be retained by the franchise despite the disciplinary setback that will force him to sit out the opening game of the next IPL campaign.
