A remarkable IPL season could soon open the doors to international cricket for one of India’s brightest young talents. Fifteen years old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is reportedly set to receive his maiden India call-up for the upcoming T20I series in Ireland and England following a record-breaking campaign in the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The BCCI selectors are scheduled to meet in Mumbai on Saturday, June 6, to finalise India’s squads for the two shortest-format series in Europe. According to reports, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to be included as selectors begin planning for major future tournaments, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later that year.
The young left-handed batter from Bihar has enjoyed a dream year. Earlier in 2026, he was named the Player of the Tournament at the U19 World Cup. He then carried that form into the IPL, where he emerged as the tournament’s highest run-scorer.
Representing Rajasthan Royals as an opening batter, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scored a record 776 runs in 16 matches while maintaining an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30. His aggressive batting style made headlines throughout the season and he smashed 72 sixes during the tournament — the highest number hit by any player in a T20 competition or series.

His performances drew praise from some of cricket’s biggest names, including Sachin Tendulkar and Pat Cummins. If selected, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is expected to become the youngest player ever to represent the Indian men’s cricket team in international matches.
While the teenager’s inclusion appears likely, reports suggest that current T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav may miss out on selection for the Ireland and England series. The batter struggled for form during the IPL 2026 and has also found it difficult to make a significant impact for India over the past 18 months.

In a major leadership change, it is being widely reported that Shreyas Iyer is set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20 captain. Interestingly, Shreyas Iyer has not played a T20 international for India since December 2023 but selectors are reportedly ready to hand him the responsibility as the team begins preparing for the next phase of international cricket.
