With the Women’s T20 World Cup just days away, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur found herself addressing an unexpected topic, not team strategy but her future in international cricket.
During the ICC Captains’ Day event held on June 7 ahead of the tournament’s June 12 start, Harmanpreet Kaur was asked whether the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup could be her final appearance at the global event. Rather than offering a direct answer immediately, the Indian skipper turned the question back on the journalist, creating a light-hearted exchange that quickly grabbed attention.

When asked if this would be her last World Cup, Harmanpreet Kaur questioned why the reporter would think so. As the journalist explained that he was simply checking, she jokingly asked whether he believed she should retire. The back-and-forth continued with the reporter clarifying that he had no such opinion, prompting Harmanpreet to question the reason behind the query. Her playful response left those present laughing and effectively dismissed any immediate retirement speculation.

While retirement talk may have stolen headlines, Harmanpreet’s focus remains firmly on India’s World Cup preparations. The skipper revealed that the team plans to use its two warm-up matches to test additional combinations and provide opportunities to players such as Radha Yadav and Bharti Fulmali before finalising plans for the tournament.

India heads into the competition hoping to secure its first ever Women’s T20 World Cup title. However, the team’s preparations were not ideal, as England bounced back from an opening defeat to win the recently concluded three-match T20I series 2-1. India began strongly with a 38-run victory but then suffered a 26-run loss before falling by six wickets in the deciding match.
Despite the setback, Harmanpreet Kaur remains confident about the team’s direction. She indicated that the management is largely settled on its preferred playing XI going forward, though the remaining practice games will provide an opportunity to evaluate alternate combinations and fine-tune the squad ahead of the marquee tournament.
For now, India’s captain appears focused on one goal, leading her side in England and chasing the elusive Women’s T20 World Cup trophy, while making it clear that retirement is not currently part of the conversation.
