India’s shocking 0-2 T20I series defeat to Ireland has drawn strong criticism from batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who described it as one of the darkest moments in Indian cricket. The former captain questioned the team’s mindset and suggested that overconfidence played a major role in the unexpected series loss.
The Shreyas Iyer-led side suffered a historic whitewash in Belfast, with Ireland registering one of the biggest achievements in its cricket history. The result has sparked widespread debate among fans and experts, with many questioning India’s performance and approach throughout the two-match series.
Writing in a column for a sports magazine, Sunil Gavaskar said losing a cricket match is part of the game but losing a series to Ireland was particularly disappointing. He explained that the defeat would have been easier to accept if Ireland had produced extraordinary cricket. Instead, he felt India’s own attitude let them down.
According to Sunil Gavaskar, the players appeared overconfident and too casual on the field, which ultimately proved costly. He said those factors, rather than Ireland producing exceptional performances, were the biggest reasons behind India’s defeat.
The former opener also drew a striking comparison with the 1983 ODI World Cup final at Lord’s, where the mighty West Indies, then two-time defending champions, suffered a stunning defeat to India. Sunil Gavaskar said the dismissals of the West Indies batters in that famous match reflected the same overconfidence and lack of urgency that he observed from the Indian batters during both T20Is against Ireland.
The series defeat has now become one of the most talked-about setbacks for Indian cricket, with Sunil Gavaskar’s comments adding to the growing scrutiny over the team’s performance and attitude.
