ICC Flags Ben Stokes’ Retirement Video, Says ECB Has Breached Anti-Corruption Code, Stokes Reacts

Ben Stokes’ surprise retirement announcement has sparked more than just emotional reactions among cricket fans. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly contacted the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over the timing of a video released during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge last month.

According to reports, the ICC wrote to the ECB after the board shared a video of Ben Stokes announcing his retirement from international cricket to his England teammates in the dressing room. The announcement was made before the start of play on Day 4 of the third Test, with Ben Stokes informing the squad that he would retire after the match concluded.

The ECB later posted the dressing-room clip on social media just before the tea break on the penultimate day of the Test. As news of Ben Stokes’ decision spread around Trent Bridge, the crowd gave the England all-rounder a loud ovation. Soon after, Ben Stokes made an immediate impact by taking a wicket with his very first delivery following the public announcement.

According to a report by the BBC, the ICC believes the timing of the video’s release may have breached its anti-corruption regulations. Under Article 2.2.11 of the Players’ and Match Officials’ Areas (PMOA) minimum standards, national cricket boards must ensure that no fixed or temporary recording equipment is used inside team dressing rooms for broadcasting video or audio during international matches.

The report further stated that the ICC informed the ECB that any video recorded inside the PMOA should not include audio or be released before the conclusion of a match.

Neither the ICC nor the ECB has officially commented on the reported development. When asked why the clip was released while the match was still in progress, Ben Stokes said that he had left the planning to the ECB’s media team, including Michael Lumb and Neil Fairbrother.

Ben Stokes took a jibe by sharing the tweet with the caption, “Sack Him”. Here is the tweet:

With Ben Stokes set to retire from international cricket, England have already started searching for their next Test captain, with current vice-captain Harry Brook emerging as the leading candidate to take over the role.
