For the first time in its history, Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) will stage a competitive match outside the country. The opening game of the 2026-27 season is scheduled to be held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 12, marking a historic moment for the popular T20 league.
The season opener will feature Melbourne Renegades taking on defending champions Perth Scorchers. It will also become the first competitive match by a foreign franchise cricket league to be played in India.
The announcement was made on Friday during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Melbourne. The initiative was presented as part of wider efforts to strengthen sporting, cultural and economic relations between India and Australia.
The high-profile match is expected to attract strong interest from Indian cricket fans, especially in Chennai which is known for its deep passion for the game. While commercial details such as ticket sales are yet to be announced, organisers are confident of receiving excellent support from local spectators.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the importance of sports in bringing the two countries closer. He said Australia and India share a strong love for sport and expressed hope that greater sporting cooperation would also boost trade, tourism and investment between the nations.
The match will also be the main attraction of a week-long festival called ‘G’day Namaste’, which will feature Australian business, sports and cultural events across India.
Speaking alongside Albanese at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the growing partnership between the two countries and expressed confidence that their relationship would continue to grow stronger in different fields, just as it has through sport.
Cricket Australia believes Chennai is the perfect venue for the BBL’s first overseas match because of its rich cricketing history and passionate fan base. BBL chief Alistair Dobson said everyone involved has been optimistic about the response from cricket lovers in the city.
Perth Scorchers also described the event as a landmark moment. Western Australia cricket Chief John Stephenson said bringing one of the league’s most successful franchises to India, widely regarded as the biggest cricket market in the world, is a major opportunity for both the club and Australian cricket.
Since its launch, every BBL match has been played in Australia. The Chennai fixture is expected to test the league’s global appeal and could open the door for more overseas matches in future seasons if the event proves successful.
