Shreyas Iyer achieved a major personal milestone during the fourth T20I against England at the County Ground in Bristol on Thursday (July 9), even as India’s struggles in the series continued. The India captain became the highest run-scorer for the country in a T20I series played in England.
The right-handed batter from Mumbai played a fighting unbeaten knock of 80 runs from 49 balls in what was a must-win match for India. His innings took his tally to 190 runs in the ongoing five-match series, helping him move past the previous Indian record held by Suryakumar Yadav.
SKY had scored 171 runs in three matches during India’s T20I series against England in 2022. Shreyas Iyer crossed that mark with another impressive performance, adding to an already consistent campaign with the bat.
The Indian skipper began the series with 68 runs from 47 balls in the opening T20I at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on July 1. He followed it up with a quick 37 off 22 deliveries in the second match. However, he managed only five runs in the third T20I at Trent Bridge, where India suffered a heavy 125-run defeat. His unbeaten 80 in Bristol helped him bounce back strongly and set a new Indian record.
While Shreyas Iyer now holds the Indian record, the overall record for the most runs in a T20I series played in England still belongs to former Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan. During the 2009 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 317 runs in seven matches played in England.

South Africa’s Reeza Hendricks is also ahead of Shreyas Iyer on the all-time list after scoring 180 runs in three T20Is in England in 2022.
Shreyas Iyer’s consistency has been one of the few positives for India in the ongoing series. With two half-centuries to his name, he has also become the first captain in international cricket to score multiple 50-plus innings in a bilateral T20I series played in England, adding another significant achievement to his campaign.
