For an entire generation, no Bollywood pairing meant guaranteed laughs quite like Govinda and director David Dhawan. Across 17 films, they built the backbone of 1990s comedy cinema and then, without much explanation, the partnership quietly ended. Fans have wondered for years what really happened. Now, Govinda has finally opened up about it himself.
In an interview, Govinda spoke fondly of David Dhawan, describing him as someone with a pure, almost childlike heart. He explained that he was always ready to keep working together, he’d hoped for an 18th, even a 19th film, but at some point, David simply felt he’d taken their creative journey as far as he wanted to. Govinda said he respected that decision without question, understanding it came from David’s own instincts about where he wanted to go next, rather than any falling out between them.
He also admitted that his feelings weren’t always straightforward, there were times he felt hurt or upset by the distance between them and he’d call David directly to talk it through. According to Govinda, David always understood and even now, whenever the subject of their partnership comes up, David gets emotional. Govinda described him as someone deeply sincere and warm-hearted at his core.
Despite not working together, the two have stayed close. Govinda shared that he reached out to David just before the release of his film Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, simply because he felt it was the right moment to reconnect. After the film released, David called him back and instead of talking about the movie, he told Govinda to let go of whatever personal troubles were weighing on him.
The warmth clearly runs both ways. Back in March, David Dhawan appeared on The Great Indian Kapil Show and called Govinda one of the finest actors he’s ever worked with. He also pushed back on the long-running rumours about Govinda showing up late to sets, pointing out that plenty of actors do the same these days and that Govinda always shows up, finishes his work properly and leaves.
David also recalled a memorable moment from the sets of Partner, where Govinda studied a demanding four-page scene and then nailed it in a single take complete with impressive physical stunts. Govinda reportedly told David to edit the scene; however he kept it as it was afterward, a moment David still calls unbelievable.
Together, the duo delivered some of Bollywood’s biggest hits, such as Raja Babu, Coolie No. 1, Hero No. 1, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and many more, cementing their place as one of the industry’s most beloved actor-director combinations.
