Could the much-loved world of Phulera ever make its way to the big screen? While Panchayat fans may be excited by the idea, actor Raghubir Yadav, who plays the popular character of Pradhan Pati, believes turning the series into a movie may not be as simple as it sounds.
Panchayat has built its popularity around the everyday lives of people in the fictional village of Phulera. From Pradhan Pati’s political adventures to Sachiv ji adjusting to village life, the show has always focused more on its characters and small moments than on large-scale drama.
The question of a Panchayat movie has gained attention after Mirzapur successfully made the transition from streaming to the big screen. However, Raghubir Yadav is not sure whether Panchayat needs a theatrical film at this stage.
In a recent interview with a leading publication, the actor said the decision would ultimately depend on the writers. He explained that he would be happy to participate if the makers decided to turn the series into a movie but he does not feel it is his decision to make.
According to Raghubir Yadav, the writers may already have plans for several more seasons, which could make a movie unnecessary. He also believes that trying to tell the stories of Phulera’s characters within a three-to-four-hour film could be difficult.
Having personally lived in villages, Raghubir Yadav said there is a lot of depth in the lives of the characters featured in Panchayat. He pointed out that characters such as Banrakas, Manju Devi and Sachiv ji have enough stories and experiences to fill much more than just a few hours of screen time.
This, he feels, is one of the reasons the makers should carefully consider whether a movie is the right format. Panchayat’s appeal comes from taking its time with village life, relationships, politics and the personalities of its characters.
Raghubir Yadav has been a familiar face in Hindi cinema and television for several decades. His film credits include Massey Sahib, Lagaan, Peepli Live, Newton, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Kathal. Television viewers also remember him for playing Mungeri Lal in Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne.
However, Panchayat brought the veteran actor to the attention of a new generation of viewers. His portrayal of Brij Bhushan Dubey, popularly known as Pradhan Pati, became one of the most recognised and loved characters in the series.
For now, there is no confirmed Panchayat movie and the decision remains with the writers and makers. If the story of Phulera eventually reaches theatres, fans will have to wait and see whether its slow-paced charm can work just as well on the big screen.
