Delhi Capitals have made a major change to their coaching setup ahead of the IPL 2027, appointing former India captain Sourav Ganguly as their new head coach. The franchise officially confirmed Ganguly’s appointment on Tuesday. He will replace former India cricketer Hemang Badani, who stepped down after spending two seasons in charge of the team.
Sourav Ganguly’s new role comes while he continues to serve as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), raising questions over a possible conflict of interest. However, Ganguly has clarified that he has received an order from the ombudsman allowing him to take up the position.
This is not the first time Sourav Ganguly has faced questions regarding his association with Delhi Capitals while holding a position in Indian cricket administration. In 2019, the then BCCI ombudsman DK Jain was approached over Sourav Ganguly’s role as an advisor to Delhi Capitals while he was also serving as CAB president. Ganguly had previously argued that conflict-of-interest regulations should be applied in a practical manner rather than creating unnecessary restrictions.
Sourav Ganguly has shared a long association with Delhi Capitals since 2019. Over the years, he has worked in several capacities, including as Director of Cricket for both the franchise’s men’s and women’s teams.
The IPL 2027 season will mark Sourav Ganguly’s first stint as the head coach of an IPL franchise. However, he already has coaching experience with Delhi Capitals’ SA20 team, Pretoria Capitals, where he served as head coach last year.
Sourav Ganguly also expressed confidence about his new assignment and said he was looking forward to working with Delhi Capitals, a franchise with which he has developed a strong relationship over the years.
The former India captain made the comments while speaking to reporters on Tuesday after watching India suffer a 1-6 defeat to Uruguay in a FIFA international friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium.
