Virat Kohli may have already announced that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his last but former England cricketer Monty Panesar feels the star India batter could continue playing international cricket even after the tournament.

Virat Kohli, who is 37, has confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his final appearance in the format. His decision has led to growing speculation about when he could finally call time on his ODI career. However, Monty Panesar believes Kohli’s hunger, intensity and commitment to fitness indicate that he still has plenty left to offer.
Speaking to media, Monty Panesar praised Virat Kohli’s approach to the game and said the former India captain continues to inspire the people around him. He highlighted Kohli’s tremendous intensity, strong focus on fitness and ability to motivate others, adding that even he feels inspired to go to the gym after watching Kohli train in the gym.

Monty Panesar also suggested that Virat Kohli’s statement about the 2027 World Cup being his last could be part of the batter’s mindset. According to him, when a player feels that only 10-15 games remain, every match becomes more important and is approached with maximum intensity, almost like a special event. Despite Virat Kohli’s current plans, Panesar does not believe the batter will necessarily retire from international cricket immediately after the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Monty Panesar also backed another former India captain Rohit Sharma to make the Indian squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. He described Rohit as a great player who can completely change a match when he gets going. The former England spinner pointed out that Rohit is an attacking batter who can hit the ball a long distance and plays with a clear mindset. He feels Rohit can make a major difference for India and believes the team needs a player of his quality.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently featured in India’s three-match ODI series against the West Indies earlier this month. The two veterans are now preparing for the matches that will lead up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. Kohli and Rohit will next be seen in action on November 4, when India take on New Zealand in the first ODI.
With the 2027 World Cup still ahead, the future of both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s ODI setup will remain a major talking point. And if Monty Panesar’s prediction is anything to go by, Kohli’s international career may not end immediately after the World Cup, what do you say?
